EIPS is Breaking new Ground for a Replacement School in Sherwood Park

Sherwood Park, AB. — Representatives of the media, families and community members are invited to join Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) as it hosts a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on its new replacement school—a K-9 school being built on Fir Street in Sherwood Park slated to open in fall 2026. The school will replace École Campbelltown and Sherwood Heights Junior High.

The ceremony will include reflections from Elder Wilson Bearhead and greetings from local dignitaries—including Cathy Allen, the Board Chair of EIPS; the Honourable Nate Glubish, Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sherwood Park-Strathcona; His Worship Rod Frank, the Mayor of Strathcona County; and, Trina Boymook, EIPS Trustee for Sherwood Park. Master of Ceremonies is Sunny Sandhu, the new school’s principal designate.

“The community has worked so hard to make this replacement school a reality,” says Allen. “I want to say a special thanks to Trustee Boymook and the families that advocated for this new building. This new school is a shining example of our shared goal to enhance learning for students, support working environments for staff and create vibrant spaces in our communities.”

The $53-million new school, designed through a collaborative- and consultative-design process, will provide an optimal learning environment for 1,015 students. Some of the exciting new features include a three-storey building for various dedicated learning spaces, two gymnasiums to support multiple sporting and event activities, and an expansive playground addition.

“This new state-of-the-art facility will provide a vibrant and innovative learning environment for students,” says Glubish. “This school will not only replace Sherwood Heights Junior High and École Campbelltown, but it will also become a cornerstone for education in our community. With specialized spaces for arts, sciences and physical education, it’s designed to inspire creativity and foster academic excellence. I look forward to the day when this school is filled with students, and I hope it will motivate the many young minds who will pass through its doors for generations to come.”
