Our staff took some time to learn about an indigenous perspective on keeping balance in life between the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental aspects of health and wellness. Modelling the teaching of the Medicine Wheel, staff collected in groups of four and put one elbow into the middle of the circle. A ball was placed in the middle, resting on all elbows. Each person represented a different facet of wellness - and as people were removed from the group, it became more difficult to keep the "balance" of the ball.
The meaning of the activity was to demonstrate the interconnectivity between the four aspects in one's life. If we do not pay attention to one aspect, it can have a dramatic impact on our overall wellness.
There is so much wisdom in indigenous teachings - and we as staff continue to be learners ourselves each and every day!
