What do a lawyer, a plumber and a film director have in common?
They are all coming to our school to talk careers! Grade nine students should mark their calendars for the morning of January 16th, when Sherwood Heights is hosting a Career Day that will give students an opportunity to meet people from different occupations and fields, and to ask questions about what a "day in the work life" of that person is like. Entrepreneurs, firefighters, dental hygienists, accountants and many more will spend short sessions with students to help them begin to think about all of their future possibilities and opportunities.
Career Day is a natural extension of November's Take Our Kids to Work Day, and part of the continuing programming that Sherwood Heights offers to help students develop an understanding of the characteristics, qualities and skills necessary to enter various careers, and help with the transition to high school and beyond.
"Students typically have an understanding of some of the more well-known careers like doctors, nurses and teachers, but there is a much wider variety of occupations out there, and this gives students a chance to learn about some of those careers as well", says Sherri Johnston, Assistant Principal and organizer of the event.
Career Day gives students a chance to learn about many different career choices also is part of our school goal that "Students are engaged, active and positive citizens who exemplify Cougar Pride: Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Enthusiasm."
Do you have a career that you would like to share? If so, please contact Sherri Johnston and let us know! We'd love to have you present!
