The aim of English language arts is to enable each student to understand and appreciate language, and to use it confidently and competently in a variety of situations for communication, personal satisfaction and learning.

The five general student outcomes for English language arts are as follows:

Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to:

- explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences

Social Studies

Grade 7 students will explore the origins, histories and movement of peoples who have forged the foundations of Canadian Confederation.  Students will examine how political, demographic, economic and social changes that have occurred since Confederation have influenced ways in which contemporary Canada has evolved.

Mathematics

The Mathematics program is divided into six strands: problem solving; number systems and operations; ratio and proportion; measurement and geometry; data management; and algebra. The content is a consolidation of the skills and concepts developed in the elementary program and forms the basis for the further study of mathematics.

Students require a  scientific calculator and a geometry set.

Science

Students apply science to solving practical problems, and to examine science and technology with respect to social impact.  The following topics will be covered:

1.     Interactions and Ecosystem

2.     Plants for Food and Fiber

3.     Heat and Temperature

4.     Structures and Form

5.     Planet Earth

Health & Personal Life Skills

The program is designed to make well-informed, healthy choices and to develop behaviours that contribute to their own well-being and that of others.  It promotes home, school and community working together to support an environment where there is a commitment to healthy choices and behaviour and a focus on prevention and health promotion.  The objectives of this course will be incorporated into other core subjects.

Physical Education

The aim of the Physical Education program is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.  Students will acquire skills through movement and experience.  They will appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity, interact positively with others and assume personal responsibility to lead an active way of life.  The emphasis is on active participation and cooperative skills.  Students must have proper PE clothes and shoes.

French Language Arts

(French Immersion Program only)

Students will develop proficiency in the French language while focusing on oral communication, writing and reading. They will develop a sense of French cultural values underlying the spoken or written word.

Grade 7 Complementary Courses

In addition to the core subjects students in the regular grade seven program will have the choice of three Complementary Courses.  French Immersion students will have the choice of two Complementary Courses.

Keeping Up With Technology

Sherwood Heights strives to teach our students the skills necessary for an increasingly technical world.  Technology and research is part of all core subject areas and complementary courses integrate technology whenever possible.  Our school is fortunate to have three computer labs and two mobile laptop labs.  Classrooms are equipped with computer projectors to enhance the learning environment.  The school library has up-to-date reference materials and a computer lab for Internet research.  Our goal is to assist students in the development of research skills needed to locate and critically evaluate reference materials.  For those students wishing to further their computer savvy, we offer an in-depth Advanced Computer Studies option.  Our Career and Technology Studies (CTS) department is outfitted with modern equipment to help ensure students get a positive "hands-on" experience.  We look forward to providing students with the technical know how that can be used now and in the future!
